An interior design student from Glynneath is limbering-up to take hold of the Olympic torch as it travels on its UK tour.

Lloyd Thomas, a 19 year-old student at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Ammanford campus has been chosen as one of six torch bearers when the torch arrives in Neath on May 26.  The torch will visit every county in the UK and every local authority area in Northern Ireland and Scotland on a 70-day journey, travelling an estimated 8,000 miles.

The search for torchbearers started in May last year following the launch of the ‘Moment to Shine’ campaign, encouraging members of the public to nominate inspirational people with personal best stories or who have made a real difference in their school or local community, to carry the Olympic flame.

As a keen sportsman, Lloyd was nominated and chosen as a torch bearer because of his achievements in Disability Sports’ Welsh Wonders team, the Welsh Academy disability sports team and his national and international honours representing Wales and GB, playing soccer as far afield as Geneva.  The selection also took into account Lloyd’s extensive work in the community.

Lloyd is relaxed about carrying the torch, but considers the opportunity a great honour.  “I’m not nervous at the moment, but I’m a little overwhelmed at being selected and actually getting to touch the real Olympic torch is amazing, but I’m really looking forward to the day,” he said.

Coleg Sir Gâr interior design tutor Lon Riley said: “Lloyd has been with the college since he started his studies on the entry level course, so we feel immensely proud that he will be taking part in the Olympic preliminary celebrations and I’m hoping to go along to support him.

“We’re trying to raise £200 in the department so that he can buy a replica of the torch, which features 8,000 small cut-out circles, representing the 8,000 inspirational people who will carry it in the UK, so that he has a special memento.”
